देश का पहला अंतरराष्ट्रीय चावल अनुसंधान केंद्र दुनिया की सबसे प्राचीन नगरी वाराणसी में खुल गया है। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने शनिवार को इस केंद्र का उद्घाटन किया। यह केंद्र दक्षिण एशिया और दक्षेस क्षेत्र का पहला अनुसंधान एवं प्रशिक्षण केंद्र है। इस मौके पर उत्तर प्रदेश के राज्यपाल राम नाईक, उत्तर प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ और केंद्रीय संचार मंत्री मनोज सिन्हा, केंद्रीय कृषि मंत्री राधामोहन सिंह भी उपस्थित थें।

वाराणसी में इस केंद्र के खोले जाने से भारत के पूर्वी हिस्से में प्रचुर मात्रा में होने वाले चावल की पैदावार को बढ़ाने और गुणवत्ता बढ़ाने में मदद मिलेगी। बता दें कि भारत 1960 से ही अंतरराष्ट्रीय चावल अनुसंधान संस्थान (आईआरआरआई) से जुड़ा है। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने नवंबर 2017 में फिलीपींस के मनीला में आईआरआरआई मुख्यालय का दौरा करने वाले पहले भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री हैं। वहां पर उन्होंने चावल के क्षेत्र में कृषिगत नवाचार और उन्नत अनुसंधान के बारे में जानकारी ली थी।
