About 487 BC, at Kushinagar near Gorakhpur, he left this world on purnima of baisakh at the age of 80. Earliar it was called Kusinara. It is known for culture heritage all over the world. It is one of four holies places for Buddhist. It is an international Buddhist pilgrimage centre. Many of the ruined stupas and viharas here. The Emperor Ashoka to have contributed to significant construction at this site.

Area- 6 sq. km. , population- 17962 (2001 census)

Temperature – max. 45 Degree C, min. 4 Degree C. , season- October to April, S.T.D. Code-05564

Location-

Kushinagar is situated at 51 km, East from Gorakhpur on National Highway no. 28. It is 20 km from its distt head quarter and 35 km from Deoria.

What to See

Main Stupa

This Stupa is located just behind the main Parinirvana Temple. It was excavated by Carlleyle in 1876. On 18th March 1927, Nirvana Chaitya was restored completely and its chamber was ceremoniously closed in the presence of 16 Buddhist priests.

Mahaparinirvan Temple

This Temple stands on the same plinth as the main Nirvan Stupa behind it. The reclining Nirvan Statue of Lord Buddha inside the temple is 6.10 meter long and is made of monolith redsandstones. It represents the “Dying Buddha’ reclining on his right side with his face towards the west.

Matha Kuar Shrine

Here a colossal statue of Buddha is installed. It represents Buddha seated under the ‘Bodhi-tree’ in a pose known as “Bhumi Sparsh Mudra’. According to sources, Lord Budhha gave his last sermon here.

Ramabhar Stupa

Well known as the Mukutbandhan chaitya, Ramabhar Stupa is the spot where Lord Buddha’s last rites were performed. Here a huge cyclindrical structure 34.14 m in diameter. It is situated the bank of Hiranyawati river.

Museum

It is Built recently by State Govt in Buddhist architectural ambience. Ancient archeological discoveries and antiquities are displayed there.

Watt Thai Temple

It is huge temple complex built in a typical. Thai Buddhist architectural fashion. This unique temple is counted among the most popular ones in Uttar Pradesh.

Burmese Temple

It is the first monastery in Kushinagar town. The Temple inside the huge complex nestles beautiful metal statues of Lord Buddh.

Meditation park, Indo-Japan-Srilanka Temple, Linth Son Chinese Temple, Birla Hindu Buddha Temple, Japanese Stupa, Korean Temple.

EXCURSIONS

PAWANAGAR (FAZILNAGAR)

It is about 22 km. east of Kushinagar on National Highway No. 28 . It is believd that Lord Budhha, while going to Kushinagar from Vaishali stopped here to accept meals from one of his disciples Chund. Here he ate Sukar-Madhav (mushroom) and developed dysentery which coused his death in Kushinagar. It is also believed that the 24th tirthankar of Jain sect, Swami Mahavir Jain passed away here.

SUN TEMPLE TURKAPATT

Is about 17 km. east from Kushinagar. During excavations two statues of Sun God were found. Among them one belonged to 4th-5th Century A.D. and another 8th-9th Century A.D.

You can reach Mahaparinirvan Place of Buddha, Kushinagar via bus, train, taxi or flight from any part of India.  

How to reach Kushinagar by flight from India.

Located on the eastern edge of Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur city is connected to all major international airports in India. From here you can go to Kushinagar via bus or taxi. The distance from Gorakhpur to Kushinagar is 52 km.

How to reach Kushinagar by bus from India 

There is a direct bus service to Gorakhpur from the major cities of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. You will get easy access to Gorakhpur from the major cities of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Ayodhya. Similarly, Patna or Bodh Gaya in Bihar also has bus service for Gorakhpur and Kushinagar. 

How to reach Kushinagar by train

Gorakhpur city is connected through all the major cities of India through rail route. Major trains from all parts of India come to Gorakhpur. From here you will have to go to Kushinagar via bus or taxi. 

How to reach Kushinagar by Taxi 

You can take taxi services through travel agency from cities like Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Bodh Gaya, Patna, Lucknow.
